Fire safety training – why it is crucial for the safety of your organisation

Fire protection is one of the fundamental areas of safety in every organization—regardless of the industry, the size of the workplace, or the type of work performed. Legal Basis for Fire Protection Training

The obligation to provide fire protection training arises in particular from:

  • the Act of 24 August 1991 on Fire Protection,
  • the Labour Code,
  • executive regulations concerning occupational health and safety.

According to the regulations, the employer is obliged to:

  • familiarize employees with fire safety regulations,
  • ensure that employees are prepared to act in the event of a fire or other emergency,
  • designate persons responsible for evacuation and emergency response.

Fire protection training is therefore an integral element of the OHS system and safety management within an organization.

Who Is Fire Protection Training Intended For?

Fire protection training should include:

  • all employees—to the extent appropriate to their job position,
  • persons designated for evacuation and firefighting activities,
  • management staff and persons supervising employees,
  • new employees as part of initial training,
  • employees after organizational or technological changes.

It should be emphasized that a lack of employee knowledge in the event of a fire may pose a real threat to life—both to the individual and to others present in the facility.

Scope of Fire Protection Training

The scope of fire protection training should be tailored to the specifics of the workplace, the type of hazards, and the organization of the facility. It most commonly includes:

1. Basic Information About Fires

  • definition of fire,
  • the fire triangle,
  • classes of fires,
  • the most common causes of fires in workplaces.

2. Fire Hazards in the Workplace

  • installations and equipment that may constitute ignition sources,
  • combustible and flammable materials,
  • hazards resulting from human error and improper behavior.

3. Fire Prevention

  • rules for the safe use of installations and equipment,
  • proper storage of materials,
  • maintaining order and unobstructed evacuation routes,
  • compliance with fire safety prohibitions and procedures.

4. Conduct in the Event of a Fire

  • rules for alarm activation and notifying emergency services,
  • the sequence of actions in an emergency situation,
  • evacuation of people from the building,
  • behavior in smoke-filled conditions.

5. Portable Firefighting Equipment

  • types of fire extinguishers,
  • principles of selecting extinguishers appropriate to the type of fire,
  • basics of safe use.

Fire Protection Training – Theory or Practice?

The greatest value of fire protection training lies in the combination of theory and practice. Theoretical knowledge helps to understand hazards, while practical exercises:

  • teach appropriate reactions under stress,
  • familiarize employees with firefighting equipment,
  • increase the effectiveness of evacuation,
  • reduce panic in emergency situations.

In the event of a fire or fire hazard, inspection authorities analyze, among other things:

  • whether employees were familiar with evacuation procedures,
  • whether training documentation was complete.

Reliably conducted and properly documented fire protection training may constitute significant evidence of the employer’s due diligence.
